Local Law Enforcement
Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they commented.
City officials stated they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
A senior political figure stated the incident left him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
