Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
