The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Between Rock Generations

It has been 20 years after the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, providing players everywhere the means to feel like rock legends. Not in reality, but try telling that someone who's mastered Free Bird’s four-minute instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, the game gave players a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes moving along the screen in time with a song. Every sequence mimicked specific notes, producing the feel of an authentic performance.

Harmonix had already experimented with rhythm games before partnering with RedOctane, later purchased by Activision during the mid-2000s. Together, they laid the groundwork for an unlikely billion-dollar franchise that had a significant influence on numerous musicians included, introducing classic groups to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, remembers the initial financial challenges of licensing the songs – despite the fact the first two games mostly used cover versions.

“We reproduced every song since the cost was so high,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We failed to secure acts such as the Who – RedOctane had virtually no money, and we were pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when the game became a hit, album purchases and radio play increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many parents reached out and thanked us for exposing their kids to the songs they loved. It became a multigenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Finds a New Audience

Northern Irish group the Answer had Never Too Late on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist Paul Mahon recalls the way the game revived older hits back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a bigger, new demographic. Typically this had been seen as music that was past it, however once it got included in the title and teenagers were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised it, and got rid of the outdated label. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the Answer’s first record remained unreleased stateside, so the game was a key medium of discovery for the group during their US tour opening for the rock giants. “Their crew had on Never Too Late during travel, and several knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Influence

Rock’s heavyweight names soon capitalised on the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on their music collections and related stories, imagery and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the group greater revenue compared to their studio albums. It sold well over half a million units upon release, while sales of their songs rose of up to 40% at a time as the industry faced decline.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered fanaticism within the community. Earlier this year, a streamer achieved a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with similar gameplay and extensive customisation options. The song is difficult even in expert mode, not to mention performed at double speed and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you should pick up a real gun and go to war,” says musician the artist.

The band previously wrapped up a successful tour when their hit was featured in the third game, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I remember the record label informing us that we were selling albums like crazy,” he says. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we performed just before the headliners at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it threatened to overshadow all other the band has done. Last year, the track featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only hear a single track, that's fine – everyone’s got a unique musical journey and I'm pleased we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, extends beyond mere transactions – it evokes a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of being a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and their goal was to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

The majority installments were released in just a half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus on peripherals died down, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community alive, and there’s set to be something from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has entered production on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game in the spirit of Guitar Hero?

“We thought such titles might become like Madden allowing annual releases,” he remarks. “With abundant new music that it could be perennially popular, so I’ve always been optimistic. There’s no reason for it to continue for future fans.”
